Souls Panting for God

A Midwest heat wave recently left individuals parched and dehydrated. We sweltered in the summer sun and looked ahead to cooler temperatures and lower humidity. Heat advisories were issued and there appeared to be no end in sight when an area of low pressure swooped through and lowered stifling temperatures.

Stepping outside on these unbearable days was like stepping into an inferno. Perspiration pulled fluids from active bodies and mouths dried and dehydrated. For those working or exercising in this scorching summer heat, the quest for hydration was unending.

On one of those days, my thoughts returned to Psalm 42:

As the deer pants for the water brooks,
So pants my soul for You, O God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God?

I could envision the wildlife of the forests, panting and parched, in search of a brook from which they could drink. No ready remedy of bottled water awaited these creatures during the heat wave. Deer, squirrels, and elk all panted as they stumbled through briars and overgrown grasses, searching and exploring for a drink.

So it should be for us as we chase after God. Our souls should be on a continuous quest to search God’s Words and His Ways for our lives. We spend hours a day in search of career advancement, financial gain, entertainment and caring for our outward appearance and little time is reserved for the pursuit of God. Our souls need to be thirsting and panting for the things of God if we expect to see answers to prayers for the impossible and to see our lives changed and recreated in His image.

Are we panting after God? Let us reevaluate our use of time. Are we giving even ten percent of our hours (He graciously gives to us) to praising Him, praying to Him or reading His Word?

As we seek after Him, we will find Him. And when we find Him, our lives are transformed. He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6).
